چکیده

We use the variational method to find the optimum launch conditions that can sustain path-averaged solitons in a periodically amplified, constant-dispersion, optical communication system even when amplifier spacing is comparable to or larger than the dispersion length. We determine the amount of prechirping and the initial peak power required and show that both the pulse width and the chirp recover their initial values at each amplifier. The prechirped solitons are different from the standard solitons in constant dispersion since their width and chirp are allowed to vary over each amplifier section. This feature results in an interesting regime in which amplifier spacing can exceed the dispersion length. Numerical solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation show that the use of prechirped solitons improves stability in comparison with guiding-center solitons in constant-dispersion fiber links. © 2000 Optical Society of America [S0740-3224(00)00904-8] OCIS codes: 060.2330, 060.4510, 060.5530

Symmetrical dispersion compensation for standard monomode-fiber-based communication systems with large amplifier spacing.

Optical 10-Gbit / s return-to-zero pulse transmission in cascaded communication systems using dispersion compensation of the standard monomode fiber with large amplifier spacing is examined. It is shown that pulse distortions that are due to Kerr nonlinearity are significantly diminished by symmetrical ordering of the compensation sections when the total number of precompensation and postcompen...

Method of compensating cross phase modulation in 10Gbit/s WDM systems over nonzero dispersion shifted fibre

Introduction: The use of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical amplification as a method of increasing the information capacity and/or reach in optical fibre systems has led to significant propagation impairments owing to fibre nonlinearity [1]. Important nonlinear effects causing inter-channel crosstalk in WDM systems are four wave mixing (FWM) and cross phase modulation (XPM). FW...

Four-wave mixing between a soliton and noise in a system with large amplifier spacing.

Depletion of soliton energy by four-wave mixing between a soliton and amplifier noise in a system with 100-km amplifier spacing is studied. Dispersion exponentially decreasing fiber is used as transmission fiber. Improvement of the system by the use of a sliding-frequency filter to reduce noise power and the depletion of soliton energy is shown. The system can be further improved by compensatio...

Minimising total energy requirements in amplified links by optimising amplifier spacing.

We investigate the energy optimization (minimization) for amplified links. We show that using the using a well-established analytic nonlinear signal-to-noise ratio noise model that for a simple amplifier model there are very clear, fiber independent, amplifier gains which minimize the total energy requirement. With a generalized amplifier model we establish the spacing for the optimum power per...

Experimental observation of autosoliton propagation in a dispersion-managed system guided by nonlinear optical loop mirrors.

Observation of autosoliton propagation in a dispersion-managed optical transmission system controlled by in-line nonlinear fiber loop switches is reported for what is believed to be the first time. The system is based on a strong dispersion map with large amplifier spacing. Operation at transmission rates of 10 and 40 Gbits/s is demonstrated.
